A photograph taken by Lesbian Herstory Archives worker, Morgan Gwenwald, depicts the audience at the 1982 Barnard College conference,“The Scholar and Feminist IX, Towards a Politics of Sexuality.” It was attended by a large variety of women with different issues they wanted to bring up, such as: violence and pornography, S&M, sex-for-pleasure vs. sex-for-reproduction, abortion, butch/femme relationships, body discourse and class and race boundaries. The event was picketed by anti-pornography groups like Women Against Violence and Pornography and Media; hence the “Against S&M” t-shirts worn by an audience member in the photograph.
